'If our grandchildren are to live in a world with a healthy population of wild polar bears, we need to take responsibility to limit further increases in climate change and care for our planet, she said. We have no other option than to accelerate the transition to a climate-smart future.'
-Elisabeth Kruger, a polar bear expert, Teen Vogue.
Polar bears could become extinct because of global warming. They are at risk of dying off if we do not take responsibility for what we've caused. We're creating too much carbon dioxide from power generation, transportation, industrial sources, chemical production, petroleum production. See in the photo below an example of the amount of carbon dioxide we produce each day.
Humans breathe out Carbon Dioxide every day. But, because of plants, our carbon dioxide is turned into oxygen. Plants are why our CO2 isn't harmful.
The temperature of the earth's surface has increased by 1.7 ℉ since 1880. It may not seem like a lot, but the amount of heat we produce is equivalent to 400,000 Atomic bombs exploding across the earth's surface every day.
The easiest way to explain climate change is the heat we produce is being trapped on the earth's surface and keeping us at a natural warm temperature. But now that we've created more and more things that emit carbon dioxide the earth's surface is getting too hot. In the last 20 years, we've experienced 14 out of the 15 of the hottest years on record. In the future, millions could be impacted by drought and water shortage, and others will experience intense flooding.
If we do not act now, places like New York, London and Shanghai could be underwater, many species of animals like polar bears could be extinct.
